L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid and a precursor for the synthesis of serotonin. Tryptophan crosses the blood-brain barrier and is converted to L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), which in turn is converted into serotonin. Serotonin is an important neurotransmitter necessary for the regulation of appetite, mood, and melatonin production.
Serotonin is a hormone that transmits signals between nerve cells. It also causes blood vessels to narrow.
Changes in the level of serotonin in the brain can alter mood.
Clinical trials indicate that L-tryptophan supplementation may support overall emotional well-being and restful sleep. L-tryptophan also has been reported to support healthy sleep quality, onset, and duration. Vitamin B6 is provided in this formula for enhanced support as an important cofactor involved in the metabolism of L-tryptophan.
